Steve Gleiber
(1963 – 2005)

Steve Gleiber
known on the web by his handle Nobby the Moose, died March 16th 2005, aged 41.

Few people live life with more verve than Steve. He had an effortless generosity of spirit that resulted in him becoming engulfed by friendships. His funeral was attended by hundreds and hundreds more from across the globe have posted condolences.

There was nothing that Steve couldn’t find the funny side of. Even when he was dying of brain cancer, he told me that it was such a pity that doctors couldn’t do a brain transplant as his much loved father, had an 'unused' one.

He was not only a loving & affectionate person but a passionate Arsenal fan. When he lived in England he went to every single home/away match and in the 80s he was the match reporter for Gunflash. He told me about an away game he went to where the fog was so thick that they couldn’t see even yards in front of them, when he got home he sat down and completely made up the match report.

In 1996 when selling books over the internet was still considered to be a mad idea, Steve set up a website for Arsenal fans – ten years on the concept of weblogs have finally caught up with his vision. His site and especially the forum on it are one of the most effective and popular fanzines on the internet. Over 2 million people have visited it. A thousand fans post every week. The quality of postings, discussions and debate remains high and it is used by thousands from all professions and walks of lives. As Steve’s sister said, he in turn was truly loved, respected and admired by so many spanning the globe

One of his dying wishes was for the community to continue and it is of course our honour to ensure that it will.

A few months ago we asked forumites if they wanted to send in letters on what the forum had come to mean to them and how it had become integrated into their lives. We received so many long and heartfelt replies that we bound them into a leather book and presented it to Steve.
I know from his family that he treasured this.

He was a devoted Arsenal fan.

He leaves behind a community of thousands who know themselves as SG Gooners (Steve Gleiber Gooners) and a web based legacy that will outlast us all.

We love you Steve.

Dear Forum, we are Steve's parents and we just had to say how grateful, thankful and humble we feel for the moving and wonderful tributes you have sent and all your condolences to us.

What surprised us most is that without most of you meeting our very special Son, he somehow came across to you all, exactly how he truly was and that was a very decent, honourable, compassionate, fun loving man.

His Life and Passion was ARSENAL.

All your fantastic letters would have embarrassed him, as he felt, he didn't do anything special only what gave Him his greatest joy, to be in touch and contribute his considerable knowledge on His beloved ARSENAL.

We hope, as most of you requested, it will not change and you will all get a lot of pleasure from it in the future.

For us who adored him and have always been very proud of Him, it's very special to see that His dedication and love of this site, will go on and be appreciated by all of ARSENAL lovers around the globe!

From Steve's Sister Dear All - Having reviewed the forum this morning, the family and I thank you all for your kind words and messages. This is a difficult time for us all today, however we do find some solace in the knowledge that he is truly loved, respected and admired by so many spanning the globe. For most of you that never knew Steve or met him, let me tell you that this young man of 41 lived life to the full and enjoyed nothing more than his passion for Arsenal. He was kind, considerate and the best brother, son and partner one could ever wish for. On the day we bury my darling brother and on the eve of the birth of his second nephew, I want him to know that he will remain in our hearts and souls. Please make sure this forum remains true to his name, as he groomed and loved it with the same care he bestowed on us all. Our deepest thanks. Susie and Gleiber Family

So sorry to hear of Steve's passing. Started checking this forum in 1997 after I stumbled on it on an internet search. I'm glad this forum will go on and on, as a fitting legacy for Steve. Thanks Steve: the sight of the green background every day brings me a strange sense of reassurance! If my boss knew how much time I spent reading the stuff on here, though, he probably wouldn't be too happy with you!!!

Though I have not seen Steve for some 20 years his passing away came as a great shock to me. Hearing from my mother, I wish Steve's family a long life and I am sure your achievements will be a legacy for your family to celebrate and remember. Anthony Slome Northwood UK

My deepest condolences on the passing of Steve from this world to the next. As I said on the Arsenal mailing list, I have no doubt Jenny Cann, aka Kampo, had the pint on the bar before he got there. Thanks for sharing your time with us, Nobs. Cheers, Kev The Desert Gooner

Hi, Im the admin of the arsenal mailing list, on behalf of all mailing list members, just like to say how sad we all were to hear of steve passing away. I frequently used to sit with a beer and log onto Steves irc chat during away games, I was always impressed by Nobbys undying pessimism and willingness to have a go at any Arsenal player he thought wasn't pulling his weight. A true gooner, he will be greatly missed, and long remembered.

Great job on the page - very nice. Thanks to all those that shared in the minutes silence - It was very moving for all my family as we stood and reflected. My wife actually shared some of her 40th with Steve, busy trying to convince her she was still gorgeous lol. Memories eh, anyway enough from me.

It is comforting for me as a forumite, and, yes, Steve Gleiber Gooner, to know that Azinoz was there on all of our behalf at Steve's funeral and the celebration of his life and spirit it so obviously deserved to be. It is also good to see the tributes from Steve's friends and family and to know they will be okay. It was especially touching to read Ron Bowen’s words and tribute to Steve. It shows all of us what really matters, not that anyone here really need be reminded, which is what I really appreciate about this board and always have. Irregardless of opinions or views, at the end of the day there is a healthy respect, even concern, (and even admiration in some cases), by and large from each of us for each other. That again is a reflection of Steve Gleiber. Everybody reads every board they can find – or join, as it may happen -. But there is a reason people choose to post again at a board, or to post regularly, year in and year out, and that is the people on the board themselves, and the discussion and debate with those people, about football, and just about anything else at times, better and worse. And it is those people who are a measure of Steve Gleiber, the sheer volume and variety of them. I was reading a Rolling Stone Magazine Memorial Issue dedicated to Hunter S. Thompson, in which one man eulogized him by simply saying and I’m paraphrasing now “Look at his friends and who they are” as all sorts of journalists, politicians, artists, and others from all sorts of backgrounds and philosophies all wrote of how he touched them in glowing tributes. I think the very same praise can be worthily given to Steve Gleiber. He gave of himself to all of us, and looking at who all of us are, and what all that entails, he gave so much to so many. It is a true gift to have the ability and a truer gift to have the goodness of spirit to give all that Steve Gleiber gave to us here and those in his life away from the computer he loved even more. We are all blessed by our contact with him, even if it is only through this page. I am not hugely religious myself, but God Bless You, Steve Gleiber. Or more accurately, God Bless You Yet Again, Steve…

We knew Steve through his other best buddy - Dave. He was a great friend and always ready with a joke. There was much laughing whenever we spent time with him. His humour was never mean, rude - sure, mean - never. This is the mark of a truly intelligent person. Neither of us has been onto this part of his site before, and we are truly amazed at his ability to touch so many people. I know his family and friends will be touched and receive a huge amount of comfort to receive these wonderful thoughts from his cyber friends. We liked him sp very much. We prayed for the best for him and we are so very sad to know that he is no longer with us. I'm sorry that we never said it - but we love you Steve, you made us laugh, and that is a rare gift. Dear All, I have had the privilege and honour to have had Steve Gleiber in my life as my partner. Those that knew Steve would know that he never did anything half-heartedly. Everyone and everything he loved, he loved with gusto, totally, unconditionally, passionately and with a rare commitment and dedication. His humour, humility and gentle loving nature, his optimism and gratitude for life were amazing qualities that made up a man who will be as deeply missed as he was loved. His beloved Arsenal football club and this site have provided him with so much joy and happiness. He was so proud of this site and as he lay dying, he felt enormous relief when he realised that arrangements had been made for the continuation of the site. Thank you to all who have so generously expressed your condolences and taken the time to post tributes. You will never know how much comfort his family, friends and I have drawn from the postings over the last few days. Angela

DEAR FORUM, MY NAME IS RON BOWEN AND I WAS STEVES BEST FRIEND IN AUSTRALIA. AS A DEVOUT MANCHESTER UNITED SUPPORTER I HAVE NEVER ENTERED THIS FORUM BEFORE THIS WEEK. I WAS HONOURED TO HAVE BEEN ABLE TO DELIVER A EULOGY TO A MAN THAT THERE IS NO EQUAL. STEVE AND I WOULD ARGUE ON THE PHONE EACH WEEKEND FOR FOUR HOURS AS WE WATCHED BOTH OUR BELOVED ARSENAL AND MANCHESTER UNITED TEAMS PLAY THEIR RESPECTIVE OPPOSITION. TO DELIVER STEVES EULOGY IN AN ARSENAL SHIRT WOULD HAVE NO DOUBT BROUGHT A SMILE TO HIS FACE AND IN HONESTY WAS NOT A DIFFICULT TASK BUT A PRIVILEGE. HAVING READ THE THOUSANDS OF MESSAGES ON THE FORUM I WISH TO THANK ALL CONTRIBUTORS FOR THEIR KIND WORDS AND AM COMFORTED IN THE KNOWLEDGE THAT STEVE WAS RESPECTED AND LOVED BY SO MANY SUPPORTERS. THAT SAID, I KNOW THAT STEVE WOULD HAVE WANTED THAT THIS SITE CONTINUES INTO THE FUTURE WITH THE SAME TASTEFUL DEBATE AND DISCUSSION COVERING EVERYTHING ARSENAL. IN SIGNING OFF I HAVE INCLUDED THE FINAL PART OF MY EULOGY AS A TRIBUTE TO A MAN LARGER THAN LIFE ITSELF, WHOSE GREATEST PASSION WAS TO BRING HUMOUR, HELP AND HAPPINESS TO ALL CONCERNED. " WE'VE SHARED A LIFETIME OF FRIENDSHIP BUT NOW YOU ARE GONE FROM ME THE SHARED TIMES THEY ARE ALL OVER MY FUTURE WHAT WILL IT BE. WITHOUT THOSE CALLS WHEN YOU SAID WHAT A GREAT GOAL FROM IN YOUR BED THE SOCCER AND THE SPORTS THAT WE SHARED, HOW WE BOTH FARED THE WHENS AND THE WHERES AND THE WHY I'LL MISS OUR TALKS THE THINGS YOU SAID. THOUGHTS OF YOUR FRIENDSHIP THROUGHOUT THE YEARS I SALUTE IT, AND YOU THROUGH MY TEARS LONG LIVE THE MEMORIES, WITH THAT OF ARSENAL TOO BECAUSE WE SHALL NEVER FORGET A FRIEND LIKE YOU."

Been away for the weekend and am greatly saddened to hear of Steve's passing. I remember emailing him a few years ago asking him if everything was ok as he had been absent from the site for a while. He mailed back thanking me for my concern, but dismissing any need for it, saying he'd been busy. My condolences to Steve’s family for your loss and I would just like to pass on my sense of privilege of having known (albeit electronically) the Gooner known as the Gleibermeister, Nobby the Moose or simply, Steve.

Didn't know you or post on this board but I was an occasional visitor to the site and absolutely loved your Arsenal history section, which I plagerised for a school project (a good 6 years ago) on Arsenal FC (sorry about that Steve but it wasn't for a coursework or exam or anything, just a bit of pointless work in class!). I first started using the forum around 1998/1999. Then contributing several times a day...especially when embroilled in a "difference of opinion" with "Mudguts" Latterly I have mainly been enjoing following the debates, sometimes dipping in under various guises and also enjoying seeing 'new regulars' join the forum family. Regulars in the early years can still be found here today, Bernard, James-Copenhagen, GazB/Wood and many more. Others, such as Clock End Cowboy, Kiwi Pete and Noggin, not so often seen, but I am sure like me keep loggin on to the site. I have met and formed friendships with some of the forumites... even renting a room to one of the aforementioned! I know that this WONDERFUL site will be maintained by forumites after Steve's far far too early passing, and that is the greatest tribute that can be paid to a man who although most never met, played an influential and important part in so many lives. I will be at the Blackburn league game on Sat, and if any forumites are there it would be great to share a drink in the ground either at half time or before the game. Rather than a pink carnation, I will be wearing 1971 home shirt, have shortish brown hair and will have a black Leverkusen/Arsneal Champ League scarf...if anyone wants to say hiand spend a few minutes remembering Steve. I will also be at the Norwich Home game, where we could do the same. Email me if interested or tel 07753 138014 Alison Aliosn

Others have already said it, but it really has been very humbling to read everyone's comments over the last couple of days. I was also moved by the non-Arsenal fans who posted with messages of condolence for Steve's family... For me this forum really is the first point of contact online with the Arsenal family - more so even than the official website. I'm living abroad at the moment and can't get to as many games as I'd like anymore, so it's especially meaningful to get this regular dose of Arsenal-related news and views... I also remember reading the messages on here during 9/11 and added to the comments over the last couple of days it makes you realise what an amazing forum Steve created. I hope it long continues as a permanent tribute to him and as a permanent meeting place for gooners everywhere. Proud to be a gooner, proud to be a forumite... Come on Arsenal!

My company added a piece of software tocheck website content which has blocked the site to me for over a week. Somehow it's not there today so I get through and find the news of Steve. He was 20000 miles away, we swapped email a few times in 2001 and I check(ed) the site daily thereafter. I feel totally gutted. Thank you Steve and all those others who have kept us up to date with progress. I will join you all at 12.43 in a minute of reflection with my 3yr old Gooner son (Alex James). Can we please ensure that we keep the forum as it was intended and stop some of the insults, arguments (without reason) and purely banal rubbish that some like to peddle. My grandfather (a true gooner) passed away almost a year ago and you guys were amazing when I broke the news and needed comfort - thank you. And thank you Steve - proud to say that name.

I just want to thank Azinoz for attending Steve's funerals on behalf of the forumites. This is a very special moment for me because my mother passed away aged 57 on march the 18th 2003, and I remember vividly how I could feel then. She would never know my youngest son who was born in may, my brother would not be walking next to his mother when he enters the church on his wedding, and so on. So to think that Steve was only 41, and a father of 3, brought all these thoughts back. I think of someone who's been deprived of the pleasure of meeting his grandchilds, of young adults who will miss the advices of their dad, and who will not have an adult to adult relationship with their dad. Jesus christ I'm 30, that's like someone told me that I've only got 10 years left... this really puts everything in perspective, it really does. Once again, Rest In Peace Nobby the moose, and thank you for this wonderful web site.

Niall and Rob may I say attending the funeral was a privilege and I would like to thank YOU both for taking on the responsibility of running the forum. I feel like an extremely selfish child even talking about this at this time but what Steve created is nothing short of a drug to me. I know for a fact that if it was just the Arsenal I was worried about I could log on to any number of other sites and receive my fix at any time but that just does not do the trick anymore - Even my doctor advises I must take a dose of Gleibers forum at least twice daily for life (along with my cholesterol tablets..

I would just like to add a message about the book Rob and co. made for Steve containing the letters you all wrote to him.. Firstly when I went over to Steve's and saw the book I was completely amazed. I was expecting a scrapbook type thing with written letters but what I saw instead was a professionally bounded, published book that was totally incredible. The autographs from Thierry, Patrick and Dennis were awesome aswell and very fitting. All Steve could say was that it was very humbling, and he continually stated that point. He only ever dreamed of getting 35000 people on his site initially (a full Highbury) but as you can see it is now well over 2000000. He just kept saying how humbling it is. It really is something to see and I look forward to reading it myself..His family told me how amazing it was to them aswell and how grateful they were to you all aswell.

This was nice to see. Arsenal America offering its sympathies to SG. http://arsenalamerica.com/new/index.php **** this is what the heading said: The Passing of a True Gooner -- When I first started following Arsenal one of the first sites I discovered was Steve Gleiber's Arsenal page. Tons of info. Sad to hear that Steve, at the age of 41, passed away. As far as I know he was one of the original Internet Gooners, paving the way for the rest of us. Rest In Peace Steve.

'Boro were without Hasselbaink, Viduka and a few other starters. They were woefully short of quality players. I would have liked to see them do well though. Chelsea can crash and burn in the CL as far as I care but I want Newcastle and even Liverpool to do well. I don't want LFC to win the whole thing...the scousers will be insufferable if they do, but a semi or lose in the final wouldn't be too bad. May even entice Gerrard to give it one more year. **** I like the format of the forum, but I'm sure no one can be satisfied with not having any registration of screen names so they won't be abused? **** A face with the name would also be nice. I wish there was some way even in some small way we can get the club to acknowledge him? Did they close that time capsule? Perhaps someone could put something in it referring to SG if possible?

Boro gave agutsy performance in Portugal but their defensive shortcomings in the first leg let them down. Sounds familiar. English sides will never be able to compete seriously in Europe if they do not learn how to defend professionally. It is no use giving "gutsy performances", pulling wool over everyone`s eyes including oneself and still going out. Learn tactics and how to defend properly. Only then will we win things in Europe.

I can only echo what every body else said about Steve. He seemed like a thoroughly top bloke. Very pleased that this fantastic forum will carry on in his name. My thanks to Rob and Niall in carrying on Steve's good work for the benefit of us all. I have no real desires for any change as regards to the forum. Some of the other message boards/forums (BBC 606 for example) have threads which drive me nuts to be honest. I like the simplicity of this one. It doesn't really seem that important right now to talk about Arsenal. But life does go on and am sure Steve wouldn't have it any other way. It would be nice if the main page carried a picture of Steve and a few words about him.

This is just a guess on my part, but in keeping with how Real Madrid likes to do things I would not be surprised if they made a record bid for Ronaldinho this summer or next. ZZ is past it and announced his retirement. Nedved may be too injury prone and Juve may be loathe to part with another great center mid. Ronaldinho is the mercenary type and has a fellow Brazilian on the club. Real Madrid and Chelsea are so bad for football for 2 different reasons.

The renewel of players contracts at Highbury as been chaotic for sometime now with a number of players involved Sol was a recent example. Obviously money is the sticking point. A revealing insight into the wonderful world of the Galacticos was given by Perez yesterday; They are having a mare of a season and their supporters, never the most resilient when faced with adversity, and when they get angry.. . Abuse is coming down on Beckham and co faster than Spuds are descending the league and bombing out of Cup Comps. But Senor Perez points out that Beckham and ZZ are earning the club money from the sales of merchandizing WW, so he asks - how can supporters criticise them. This shows the difference in some clubs to the way that things are perceived, by on the one hand board members - and on the other by supporters. Perhaps it's this contridictary clash of views of priorities that lies behind our contract dealings with players?.

Vince Ordinaire, I certainly agree that Chelsea were caught in an outright lie. Which should undermine their side of the story. Cole hadn't said anything publicly and Wenger may have said it for him that he was there. I like the fact that Ash said he couldn't play for another English club. I wish we'd get his wages sorted. I have the feeling he wasn't even asking for a salary above his worth. I also have the feeling the club has perhaps used his loyalty and his being a dye in the wool gooner against him in offering him lower than expected or lower than his worth. I would not like to see loyalty used against a player like that. If anything it should be rewarded.

To show you how sports is given a local twist whenever possible, after the FA cup QF, one American sports site's headline was about two American keepers may face off in final.

Very sorry to hear the news about Steve, condolences to Rob and all of his family. I was shocked when checking the site to hear the news as unlike many, I didn't realise Steve was so ill, just that he hadn't been around the site. I don't profess to have known him well but I do remember having a few chats with him on the matchday chat and he always had a great sense of humour and genuine love of Arsenal.

One more thing which I think is important. We've seen that it may be difficult to prove a case against Chelsea, but there is one indisputable fact. They fervently denied meeting with Cole at all when the question first arose. They made several statements with cock and bull stories about different meetings in different places, and various alibis. They have now admitted that they did meet him, so regardless of the circumstances of that meeting they have shown themselves to be liars and brazen liars at that. They look very guilty to me, and the FA already have enough grounds to come down hard on them.

AG - I can imagine that Cole would be looking at all the options if it's true that someone reneged on the original wages offer. If he didn't want to go to another English club (which some press reports have said) then Spain and Italy would be the only realistic options for a player of his ability. But both countries do have a racism problem that might put him off. It's a difficult situation for him, and like some other posters I sympathise with him if someone at the club has messed him around. It seems that we have created this problem ourselves because by all accounts he was a loyal gooner, and that may be why he doesn't want to play for another English club. Regarding the question of whether or not he has been messed around with a wages offer that was reneged, I won't pretend to know. But I have previously expressed my concerns on here that there is someone, somewhere in the club's management who is too concerned with saving every penny and is short-sightedly playing Scrooge, or perhaps "bad cop" to Arsene's "good cop". It's just the feeling I've got from events over the last few seasons. I'm not against the board as a whole at all, but I worry that one meddlesome individual is causing more than his share of problems. I don't know who it might be, but others probably have their own ideas. Most large companies probably have someone like this somewhere in their ranks, a stubborn, antagonistic individual who can do a lot of harm. In my experience the sooner they are moved to a position where they are not involved with sensitive negotiations the better. The same theme seems to be running through everything to do with the club recently. An awful lot of good work being undermined by just a few crucial errors. Having said that, I'd prefer to finish by paraphrasing a quote I read earlier attributed to PHW when some moron asked him if they want to replace AW as manager - " Arsene has been here eight years, and in all that time we've never finished lower than second" Says it all. PTBAG.

Without the super agent CB, its a case of he said/she said. I think at the very least this agent should be banned by the FA from any deals involving players if he doesn't come forward. Also, Chelsea did break the rules, no matter what scenario one believes. **** I am also troubled by the 'don't know' from Reyes. Lets hope he starts scoring soon. RvP should get some minutes as well. Not sure if I'd make him a starter but at least 15 mins off the bench. I would also like to see more of Quincy and remain adamant that wide right may be his true calling. **** I read that Senderos is getting his first senior call up for the Swiss national team. Congrats to him. I also read that his 17 & under side were European champs. I didn't know that. I know he captained the side. Anyone notice how he seems to be physically bigger than a year ago? He's filling out. **** Runner up is the minimum, I agree. Man Yoo are looking pretty good. The defense is tighter than a duck's right now and we have the tougher run of games having to play Liverpool, Everton and Chelsea but I think they'll drop points again and I think we can beat Chelsea at the Bridge. **** Anyone know what game Chelsea will probably win the title in, if they continue this pace?

I wasn't going to post again tonight but I felt I had to after reading Rob K's last post. I'm not sure if I ever thanked Rob and Nial for what they did, and the effort they put in, so I'd like to take this oportunity to do so. Cheers Lads, and thanks for carrying on Steves great work. I'm also delighted to hear that Steve enjoyed reading it, and I hope that he may of found it to be of some comfort to him. These last 48 hours on this forum have been a roller-coaster ride of emotion, and I feel privelaged to have been part of it. You know what? I dont think this forum will ever be the same again. I'm sure in the coming months and years there'll be moments when things get heated on here, but we'll think about this week, take a step back, and remember the reason why Steve set this forum up. Come on Arsenal.

Many of you contributed to the book for Steve several months ago, but I didnt want to comment on it until now. You will be glad to know that Steve received and read every one. Between Niall & myself we ended up receiving over 60 letters to Steve - many several pages long and all full of personal & poignant stories. I wrote a foreword and had it bound into a leather book. The last three pages were reserved for signed photos with dedications to Steve from TH14, PV4 & DB10. Steve's partner Angela presented him with the book in January and he phoned me immediately to say that it was one of the most special things he had ever received. He had already read most of the letters and recounted some of the funny and touching ones. Steve said that he really didnt think that he deserved it - I of course told him otherwise.

Thanks also to Steves good friends and family (not surprised to see that a special man had special people in his life) who have, at this difficult time, come on here to let us know a little more about what Steve was really like. We all knew he was a massive Gooner, with an obvious sense of humour, but we now know that he was a great friend to everyone he met, with an obvious love for everyone in his family. To be honest I think we all guessed he was like that anyway. I was going to make another post talking about some possible transfer targets I've heard of today, but I think Steve would want us to start talking about the Club he loved so passionately again so I'm going to add it to this post. Was listening to Talksport this morning and there were two stories of interest. Apparently in France its being reported that Jose will be leaving for Real in the Summer, with Owen, and Luis Figo coming here! Not too sure about that one, as I wasnt sure about a link to the German striker Miloslav Klos. Now thats definately one I'm not going to get excited about!. On skysports though there was this link: http://skysports.planetfootball.com/list.asp?hlid=263258&CPID=22&CLID=3&lid=&title=Wenger+back+in+for+Hleb&channel=Football_Home Now this seems far more like an 'Arsene' signing to me. Wonder what the final figure of players linked to the Club will be come the start of the season? Bet its more than 150!! Come on Arsenal.

I will admit to being a little misty eyed when Azinoz described the funeral. Especially the Manc wearing an Asrenal shirt. Believe me, that is friendship. I don't think I could have if the reverse happened to me. That said and it would be a disservice to SG if we didn't continue arguing (tastefully) and discussing Arsenal. **** So, with that, I will say that Cole's account of the meeting is very interesting. Would it be possible that both parties were misled by the agents? Why would Chelsea knowingly meet with Cole knowing that he had not approved of the meeting prior? Maybe I'm assuming too much of Mourinho and Kenyon. Would they stoop so far? **** I have take another look at Eissen but I'm not completely sold on him. Admittedly, I haven't watched him as closely as some, but I will certainly do so now. **** Blackburn will not be walkovers. Have they turned the corner? They have gone 6 games without losing now I think? We can expect another game where the midfield is packed 5 across and the tackles coming in hard. This may turn out to be another 1-0, grind out victory on Saturday. Same for the cup semi final as well.

I took a couple of days off on Monday and Tuesday to do some stuff at home and dipped in to the forum more than usual. As ever I was totally absorbed by the various offerings from Arsenal supporters throughout the world--possible transfers in and out,the Chelsea/Cole situation, the merits of Freddie,7-2 winners @ Cheltenham etc just absolutely fascinating reading.I nearly posted a message to that effect ie what a great site this is and what pleasure I get from reading it every day(despite being an infrequent poster).Next thing I am reading Rob K's message and its devastating news.Maybe its because I'm living a long way from home but I get great comfort in being part of this site.It struck me how lucky Arsenal are to have such terrific supporters and if the people who post here are a true reflection of all Arsenal fans then the club has a great future;I for one am (as always) proud to be a gooner. The subsequent outpouring of affection and goodwill only reinforces my opinion. For what its worth the third race here @ Philadelphia Park this Sunday will be The Steve Gleiber Memorial Stakes and the fifth will be The Worldwide Gooner Stakes. Finally kudos to Azinoz;great job compadre. To all fellow gooners regards and great good fortune to you all.

To dear Steve's family and friends all over the globe - all the wonderful sentiments and thoughts on this site say it all. Steve - a wonderful, cuddly, kind, crazy bear of a man. He made me laugh a lot, he did wonders with our website, we had great banter by phone, text and email and when I finally met him it was like meeting someone I'd been friends with all my life. Even in the last few weeks he was as brave as he was funny and managed to send me silly text messages through all the horrors of what was happening to him. I promised him that perhaps one day I would forgive him for always calling my husband "Sven".....OK, sweetie...you're forgiven. Shalom.

Just heard the news. A bit shocking I have to say. Steve, wherever you are mate, I truly thank you for this wonderful site that you have created, together with the amount of energy and dedication you have poured in maintaining it. Honestly, there was never a site for the past 6 years that I have regularly followed daily with true eagerness as much as I did with Steve's forum. To all of us, our love for Arsenal manifests in many ways and I am proud and grateful to say that Steve's forum is part of that beautiful experience that is Arsenal in my life. Together with watching matches and all, looking up Steve's forum is something that I couldn't live without as an Arsenal supporter and the many postings below is a testament to that fact. With this forum, we've met all sorts of people and debated continuously on some interesting subjects and sometimes, not so interesting ones (Sophists, Ljungberg/Wiltord, etc.) and although we've had our differences, the common bond that we all shared was our love for Arsenal. And meeting all of these wonderful characters, with their passion for Arsenal, has been a real privilege for me. Thank you for all those, Steve. I really do. It's been a golden era in some sorts for Arsenal for these past few years and I think we are going through a period of transition of sorts. What saddens me is that for the passionate fan that Steve was, he was never able to see us move to our new home in Ashburton, seeing how the wonderful youths that we are all excited about developing their talents here with us and finally us winning our first Champions League trophy and being a major force in Europe. Don't worry Steve, we'll do it and we'll keep on believing that dream for you. You'll be in our prayers Steve and God bless your soul...Rest in Peace mate...

Azinoz, could I just say thank you for the account of Steve's funeral service and for attending on behalf of all of us. What has shone through from your account is just how massive an Arsenal fan Steve was - not to mention he was a big chap himself standing at full height of 6'3. From reading the accounts of some of you from the book contributions that I received and from the postings over the past couple of days, it is clear that all of you, like me, have found this forum addictive, hugely informative and a top class medium for engaging with and in some cases meeting up with fellow Arsenal fans. This is all due to one man and it is to him that all this is due. It is clear that many, if love is the right word, love this forum and it enriches our daily grind. On that note, I am honoured that Rob has asked me to contribute to keeping the forum and the website running smoothly in Steve's honour and memory. All I can say is that if we can keep this forum running in the manner Steve did, we will be doing OK. The website however, imo, is all of ours and to that end if, in time, anyone has any suggestions as to how we can improve it, or take it forward please let Rob and I know and I will endeavour to learn how all this is put together, for at a quick glance it is a superbly written website. Thanks.

To everyone, a little information and few observations from today. Steve Gleiber was cremated today 17 March St.Patricks day.I was advised of the timing and location of the service about four hours before it was due to commence, luckily for me it was fairly close by and wasn't a problem in attending, although you could hardly say I was dressed for it.Added to that buying a bunch of flowers with 30 minutes to kick off meant thatI had to accept whatever the florist felt like giving me. I thought at the time, even I look in better condition than what was being offered , anyway the card and the attendance register has been signed on behalf of the entire forum including that very kind Chelsea supporter who posted his condolences yesterday and that's another tribute to the great man. Judging from the very well attended service there is no doubt that Steve was a fine very popular individual. A measure of the man apart from being six foot three apparently, was his best friend, a Manc wearing an Arsenal shirt in his honour giving the eulogy (even I would have baulked at wearing a Manc one as a tribute to my best friend)It appears he had a wonderful sense of humour a love for his family, humanity and most importantly in this context, an unquenchable passion for the Arsenal. I can tell you the Arse was mentioned more times than the Almighty and that's not an exagerration. I had never met the man and yet I left the chaple feeling as though I was his best mate. And I think it is important for you all to know that there is no doubt that members of his family and friends were equally moved by the outpourings of grief on the forum and that is I think a tribute to us all, RIP

We are all lucky to have found Steve's place and be welcomed and accepted into it. And obviously those who knew a man of such quality are luckier still. Small solace now perhaps, but in time that will mean more and more. My prayers are with all here today, most of all his family right now...

Another occasional postr, but regualar viewer whose been coming on here since the first 'PV4 to Madrid & Sol is a Gooner' summer of 2001. Steve Gleiber was active in the early days i was on the site, then he got ill, and we saw far less of him, although you felt his presence was there somewhere, monitoring the site for thise that stepped out of line. Saddened by the news of Steve's death at such a young age , like many I didn't know SG, but I have the upmost respect for someone who took time to set up a facility such as this website in his own spare time ( i know from my own lack of free time how difficult it is to nutrure and build 'labour of love' projects such as this. Two suggestions, could Rob or whoever is going to manage the site now (if indeed someone is- I don't totally know how all this works on a day to day basis) rename the site the Steve Gleiber memorial Supporters forum, with an explaination on the home page as to who SG was. also the Gooner should be told for the next issue, Bernhard as you wrote a small piece alittle while back could put something together. Still at least SG has got to see Chelsea win the league

According to planet football arsenal are keen on Jemaine Jenas after it was revealed he may leave since he has been on the bench, not a bad deal, and according to tribal football arsenal will sign owen with the possiblilty reyes goin the other way as a deal, and also it reveals about emre. Does anyone agree when i say ljungbergs time is to leave and we should replace him with SWP? and also replace pires with vaart, and edu with jenas? Also i belive Cole shouldnt leave but if worst comes to worst and he leaves then we already have an ever improving Clichy, think about it was cole as good as clichy at his age, this guys the real thing. Also Senderos has maybe proved it that maybe arsenal shouldnt buy a CB, maybe but i still think we need a decent back up one. But we definetly need a RB, i watched HINKEL play, and the german international looks apart and he RB not a converted MR. Possible swap with lehman too?

As a Chelsea fan who regularly visits this forum to get a sense of what Arsenal fans are thinking (and with an intelligent, articulate level of debate far in advance of the likes of AWIMB for example) I just wish to extend my condolences to Steve's friends and family. i'd picked up previously that he was ill but it was still a shock to read the awful news this morning. It's clear that what he constructed here was a labour of love and I sincerely hope that this forum will be able to carry on, if for no other reason than as a tribute to Steve. Clearly a true football fan.

Steve Gleiber gave us this wonderful site. Steve gave us a place to talk about our favourite Arsenal. Steve was a passionate fan, and made us even more passionate with this wonderful site. Steve gave me reason to come into the net for "talks" with fellow fans. Steve brought us all together. Steve patiently read through each of our comments, and ensured we stayed civil. I regard Steve as the "Greatest Gooner of all Gooners" here. I am glad to have celebrated the many successes of Arsenal with you. And because of you, Gooners from all over the world could come to this site and celebrate. You made it happen, and we will always remember you. Thanks very much Stevie G, rest well now. This forum has been part of my life for a while now, and I remember logging on the IRC chat during matches and Steve would always throw me out because of swearing, or because of the scripts that automatically sent you off if you wrote "Sheringham" or "Anelka". It is a very sad news, I never met him but you know what it's like on the net, you can "feel" someone. At only 42 and a father of three, I want to send my deepest condoleances to everyone linked with him but especially his close family. I knew the writing was on the wall when I read how serious his illness was, since I lost my mother two years ago from cancer, but there is always a possibility of an exception. This wasn't to be in, but I'm sure he gave this terrible disease a run for it's money. Rest In Peace, Steve Gleiber.

So upset to hear the news about Steve. It's a testimony to the uniqueness of his site that I am checking it every day despite travelling round India! I can't believe we wil never see the good old yellow text to make us realise we are misbehaving! But Steve was never controlling, just passionate about his site. And it was so much more than just setting up a site with his internet skills - the change in the site since he has been away from it more lately shows how he subtly but actively guided it. The greatest respect we can pay to show how much this site means to us is to keep arguing and discussing but never invoking disresect or hatred. Steve used to say that the aim of the site was to recreate in cybersace the sort of conversations we would have in a pub - which would occasionally veer off into politics or even wine - but not into disrespect. Let's try to keep it that way. My sincerest condolences to you Rob and all of Steve's family. And a big up to you too Steve. Thanks mate - you have certainly touched a lot of lives - and what more can anyone do with theier lives but that?

At the risk of being told I'm insensitive as well as my own sense of courtesy and common decency, I'm posting this link regarding Cole: http://msn.foxsports.com/soccer/story/3465040 I recall a while back on more than a few occassions where either Steve or those that knew him personally said he preferred the site to go on, joked about sentimentality, especially about his person and his main concern was admirably not himself but continuing the site and discussing his love for Arsenal which binds us all. I still feel like I am know him in strange way even though we've never met.

Just got back from work and read the very sad news. Although I rarely post on the site, I feel compelled to offer my condolences to Steve's close friends and family and also add a few words to what will no doubt become a deluge over the next few hours. For the past three years or more this forum has for me been one of the few constants in the generally fickle world of football/internet/arsenal whateveryouwanttocallit. I log on just about every day and in a strange and very beguiling way feel privileged to have shared a small part in the sometimes silly, sometimes informative, sometimes maddening but usually thought provoking world of this forum. I think it's true to say that this site has been one of the more interesting places on the net for us gooners to congregate. Indeed just about everyone I've introduced to it appears to have become addicted to it in some small way. Steve, wherever you are, if you can here me, I would like to raise a glass to you tonight. dormouse, your comments are most kind. I too very much appreciate those who, like yourself, offer something new, informative, serious or just plain witty and entertaining. This is a wonderful site for anyone to show how highly they value not only the Club, in respect both of its footballing side and its governors, but also the whole Arsenal family as represented by some truly terrific supporters. The love for the Club on here is truly infectious and that's ok by me, and I don't propose to leave the forum in a hurry, it's just that I have so little time these days to play on it! Anyway, there are some folks who irritate us all at times, and probably the best way to deal with those who get on our tits is to ignore them once and for all, a fate I am sure I have suffered a few times myself, quite deservedly. In the meantime, it would be wrong of me to withhold from you (and any others on here genuinely and open-mindedly interested) my own personal sense that the salaries at the Club are less Wenger's business than the player purchasing side, which, if it were the case, may represent a very difficult grey area. It may, for example, be the case at most clubs that the board is in charge of both areas, but at Arsenal, the manager SEEMS to have more say in transfers/player purchasing than in wages, and that's out of sync and needs to be put back into a form of better balance. If this does not happen, in my opinion it leaves things open for the wrong people to play boss where they shouldn't be, whilst agents and players are given the perfect opportunity to bounce parties off against each other, generating an unharmonious and unhealthy atmosphere. The Club should in a word unite behind Wenger 100% if they haven't done so already. Otherwise we will continue to struggle to sign players and to keep the ones we've got, no less. As I say, though, this sentiment is just a suspicion (not a conspiracy theory, nor do I hold any rancour over it or any obsessive feelings), and not knowledge, and I hope to get back with some more of that in due course. In the meantime, I'm more than happy with things as they currently stand both as a fan and a shareholder and I believe the Club will sort or improve things as time goes by as they have been doing for some time under Fiszman and Wenger, who effectively control Arsenal FC. It remains one of the best run clubs in the world, we are lucky to be fans of it, and we should appreciate the efforts of both board and footballing staff in making it so, and get behind them as caringly as possible.

Dear Forum - I am very sad to have to say that my wonderful cousin Steve Gleiber, host of the forum, passed away a few hours ago. Stevie was only 41 years old but has finally lost his battle with cancer. He is survived by his loving family Jutka, Janche & Susie and his wonderful partner Angela. He was a big guy with a bigger heart. Even though he lived in Sydney, and we, his maternal family, live in the UK he was always a large part of all of our lives and we loved him dearly. He loved his family & partner, life & Arsenal passionately. I miss him already.
